TODAY'S NEWS 

1.  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next 4 days. The very heavy rainfall is also likely over Himachal Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand. 

2.  The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for bye polls for 12 Rajya Sabha seats in nine states. Notification in this regard will be issued on the 14th of this month and nominations can be filed till the 21st of this month. The scrutiny of nominations will be done on the 22nd of the August. The Election will be held on the 3rd of next month. 

3.  The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch its latest Earth Observation Satellite, EOS-08, on August 15. This launch, which coincides with India’s Independence Day, will be conducted from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, using the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)-D3.

4.  The Government aims to take IT industry to tier-2 and tier-3 cities of country to ensure every citizen gets benefit of IT revolution.

5.  The University Grant Commission (UGC) has granted permission to 149 private universities in the last five years. In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar informed that UGC has received 806 proposals and applications from various colleges across the country for grant of autonomous status.

6.  The Centre has approved installation of Kavach 4.0 on 10 thousand locomotives. Kavach will automatically control the train's speed and can apply the brakes if necessary to prevent accidentally sent me. 

7.  The government said, a total of 1936 One Station One Product, OSOP outlets were operational at 1702 stations in the country. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, a total of 67,979 direct beneficiaries have availed the opportunities under this scheme.

8.  All Government Offices Closed On the occasion of World Tribal Day (9th August), the Rajasthan government has declared a public holiday. During this time, schools and colleges as well as banks and all government offices will remain closed in the entire state. 

9.  Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) has started its first executive training program for the aviation sector at the Asian Institute of Transport Development (AITD) at Dwaraka, New Delhi. The three-day program from August 5th to August 7th will be focused on “Safety Management Systems” for working professionals, it is conducted in collaboration with Airbus.

10.  The bypoll for one vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Telangana will be held on September 3.   The seat fell vacant with the resignation of BRS MP K. Keshava Rao, who joined the Congress.

11.  The Andhra Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday decided to amend law to remove the poll-related ‘disqualification’ clause if those contesting the local body polls have more than two children. It also decided to continue the ban on Maoist outfits in Andhra Pradesh for another year.

12.  Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) want to sound Maha Vikas Aghadi’s poll bugle for Maharashtra. Assembly election with a joint meeting of office bearers of all alliance parties on August 16.

13.  Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday instructed the reactivation of the Anti-Romeo Squad teams. He also directed the local officials to display the list of top 10 criminals in the district in police stations.

LEGAL REPORT 

1.  The government has rejected media reports question paper leaks for NEET-PG 2024. Union Health Ministry has termed such reports as false and misleading.

2.  CBI takes over probe into deaths of three IAS aspirants in flooded basement of a coaching centre in Delhi.

3.  The Madras High Court has declared Section 77-A of the Registration Act, 1908 unconstitutional. This ruling has far-reaching implications for property registration and ownership rights in Tamil Nadu.

Section 77-A, introduced to the Central enactment by way of a 2022 State amendment, granted District Registrars the power to cancel documents related to immovable property if they were found to have been registered through fraud or on submission of forged revenue records.

4.  Waqf Bill to be introduced in Lok Sabha on August 8, Opposition demands sending it to parliamentary panel.  The Bill which seeks to amend the law governing waqf boards has proposed far-reaching changes in the present Act, including ensuring the representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in such bodies.

1. In Bihar, six people lost their lives due to lightning in Nawada district yesterday. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed grief over loss of lives. 

FINANCE 

1.  Lok Sabha passes Finance Bill 2024; Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reiterates that government’s focus is on economic growth and simplify tax laws.  The Bill gives effect to the financial proposals of the Central Government for the financial year 2024- 2025.

2.  The Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal  urged the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation - BIMSTEC countries for faster negotiations of Free Trade Agreement (FTA). 

3.  The Government has said that one crore 48 lakh candidates have been trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana till date. The scheme was started in 2015, for imparting skill development training to youth across the country. 

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS 

1.  Actor Dhanush's 'Raayan' is doing a fabulous business at the box office. However, the film might just be releasing on an OTT Platform soon. The official streaming rights of the film are with Prime Video and Sun Pictures.

2.  Actor Naga Chaitanya, (Son of Actor Nagarjuna) who divorced Samantha Ruth Prabhu a few years ago, is all set to tie the knot with Sobhita Dhulipala very soon, according to multiple media reports.

DEFENCE NEWS 

1.  The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is confident of supplying all the 83 light combat aircraft TEJAS MK-1A well within the timeline of 2028-29, to the Indian Air ForceThe National Commission for Women (NCW) has inaugurated the Digital Shakti Center in New Delhi to address the rising cybercrimes against women. This initiative aims to empower women with cyber safety knowledge, provide support for complaint registration, and create a safe digital environment. 

2.  The Indian Air Force’s indigenous fighter aircraft, TEJAS, intercepted the Eurofighter Typhoon and Rafale aircraft from the German, Spanish, and French Air Forces ahead of their arrival at Sulur for the multinational exercise Tarang Shakti.The highly anticipated Tarang Shakti air combat exercise commenced at Sulur in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

3.  The massive search anti-militancy operation in Basantgarh area in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district entered second day on Wednesday amid heavy rainfall in Jammu Division.The search operation was launched by joint team of security forces on Tuesday in the area following intelligence inputs received by forces about the presence of militants in the area.

4.  The Ministry of Defence refused to disclose data on armed forces personnel shortages, citing national security concerns, which has led to criticism from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. 

✈ INTERNATIONAL NEWS 

1.  The President Smt. Droupadi Murmu who is on a two-day state visit to New Zealand will visit Capital Wellington today. 

2.  The High Commission of India in Dhaka, Bangladesh has issued an advisory for Indian Nationals living in the country. The Commission in its advisory said, in view of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Indian community members and the Indian students residing in Bangladesh are advised to avoid local travel and minimize their movement outside their living premises. 

3.  Non-essential staff and families of Indian High Commission in Dhaka have returned to India from Bangladesh on voluntary basis through commercial flight. 

4.  External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the political situation in Bangladesh. 

5.  The Australian government has unveiled the Maitri Research and Cultural Partnerships Grants. These grants, aimed at fostering Australia-India collaboration, encompass sustainable manufacturing, energy transition research, and artistic projects.

6.  Nearly 600 people from Bangladesh were stopped from entering India at a border point in the Indian state of West Bengal by the Border Security Force (BSF), which has been on high alert since Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and fled the country on Monday.

1.  In Nepal, Floods and landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains continued to wreak chaos across Nepal, resulting in 12 deaths over the past 24 hours in Baglung and Gumli. 

2.  In Bangladesh, after major reshuffle in top level of Army, new authorities have reconstituted the police force of the country. The new regime replaced the additional Inspector General of Police Md. Harun Ar Rashid as Director General of Rapid Action Battalion with AKM Shahidur Rahman. 

3.  Five people died, including four Chinese nationals, after a helicopter crashed in Shivapuri National Park in Nuwakot, Nepal, on Wednesday. 

4.  Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus-led interim government in Bangladesh will take the oath on Thursday, Army Chief Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman said.

5.  Israel's army chief on Wednesday (Aug 7) vowed to hunt down and eliminate Yahya Sinwar after he was named the new leader of Hamas, following the death of his predecessor in Tehran last week.

6.  Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (August 7) accused Ukraine of launching a "large-scale provocation" in Russia's Kursk region, where intense battles raged for the second day. 

7.  Bulgaria on Wednesday (Aug 7) passed a controversial amendment to its education law that widens its scope to ban LGBTQ "propaganda" in school. The amendment, as per reports, has been widely criticised by human rights groups. The new law was proposed by the pro-Russian Vazrazhdane party.

2.  OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024 (26 JULY 2024 – 11 AUGUST 2024)

Indian Olympic Association protests wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification at Paris Olympics; Centre is providing all sorts of help.  Ms Phogat was playing in the 50 kg category and her weight was found 100 gram more than the stipulated criterion. 

3.  Indian Olympic Association President, P.T. Usha said, Wrestling Federation of India has filed an appeal to United World Wrestling to reconsider the decision of disqualification. She added, IOA is following the matter in strongest possible manner.

4.  PM Modi has offered consolation to the wrestler after her disqualification. 

5.  Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann suggested on Wednesday that wrestler Vinesh Phogat could have cut her hair to reach the desired weight. “Her hair alone may have weighed 200 grams,” he remarked.

6.  Mirabai Chanu misses out on historic second medal after Vinesh's heartbreak. She managed a best lift of 88kg in snatch, which had put her in the bronze medal position. However, she then managed to get a best lift of 111kg in ahead of the clean and jerk rounds and that left her with a total lift of 199kg. This meant that Mirabai finished fourth and she thus missed out on a historic second Olympic medal. 

7.  Double Olympic Medalist and Star Indian shooter Manu Bhaker returns to India. She received an overwhelming welcome by her fans and officials of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports at Indira Gandhi International Airport in the National Capital. 

8.  In Paris Olympic, in the women's 100 metres & hurdles, Jyothi Yarraji advanced to the repechage round after finishing seventh place. 

9.  Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Thursday announced her retirement after being disqualified from the Olympics, sharing an emotional message on X. She expressed her heartbreak, saying, “Maa kushti jeet gayi, main haar gayi” (Wrestling has defeated me, I have lost).

10.  Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik is set to feature in the upcoming edition of the SA20, starting January 9. Thus, he will become the first-ever cricketer from India to take part in the South African T20 league which is now 2 seasons old. Karthik will join Paarl Royals as an overseas player ahead of the new season.
