TODAY'S NEWS
1. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Tuesday approved the launch of three new housing schemes in multiple categories, ranging from HIG (high-income group) units in Dwarka to EWS flats in Narela, under which 39,573 flats will be made available.
2. Former Deputy Prime Minister and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani was on Tuesday (August 6, 2024) admitted to Delhi’s Apollo Hospital. The 96-year-old is stable and under observation.
3. National Commission for Women chairperson Rekha Sharma's tenure ended on Tuesday. She assumed the charge of NCW chairperson on 7 August 2018.
4. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu had an online meeting with the Youtube Global CEO Neal Mohan and Google Asia Pacific Head Sanjay Gupta. The Chief Minister mentioned on social media platform ‘X’ that during the meeting, they discussed setting up a YouTube Academy in Andhra Pradesh in collaboration with local partners to foster AI, content development, skill development and certification programmes.
5. In Uttrakhand, the rescue operation is almost completed in Kedarghati of Rudraprayag District. Helicopter journey to Kedarnath Dham will resume from today. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today conducted an aerial inspection of the disaster-affected areas of Rudraprayag district.
6. In Gujarat, over 45 dams in the state are overflowing and have been put on high alert. Sardar Sarovar dam the largest dam in the state has reached 60 percent of its storage capacity.
7. In Kerala, the cabinet sub-committee camping in the region has directed to intensify search operations on both banks of Chaliyar river. It also directed that the help of the Navy and the Coast Guard may be sought to ensure that the bodies have not flowed into the sea.
8. “VIRAASAT”, a fortnight long exhibition dedicated to celebrating 10th National Handloom Day began at Handloom Haat in Janpath on 3rd August, 2024. National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd (NHDC) is organising the handloom expo under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India which will conclude on 16th August, 2024.
9. BJP is set to launch a three-day 'Tiranga Yatra' campaign in Madhya Pradesh on 11 August.
10. The government on Tuesday appointed CS Setty as chairman of the country's biggest lender State Bank of India for a period of three years.
LEGAL REPORT
1. The Delhi police on Tuesday claimed to have busted a cricket betting racket in Paschim Vihar in west Delhi. The team nabbed 14 people and seized Rs 2.21 crore cash, 18 mobile phones, two currency-counting machines and two gambling briefcases.
2. Madhya Pradesh Bhim Sena incharge Pankaj Atulkar was arrested on Tuesday from Betul for allegedly issuing a death threat on social media to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud in connection with the Supreme Court's judgement on reservations.
FINANCE
1. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman has clarified that minimum balance is not required for PM Jandhan accounts and basic savings bank deposit accounts. She was replying to supplementaries during question hour in the Rajya Sabha over charges recovered by various banks from account holders for non-maintenance of minimum balance.
2. On 4 August 2024, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that the state would buy all crops at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), making Haryana the first state in India to do this on such a wide scale.
3. The Tata Group has inaugurated a ₹27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam, aiming to produce 15 billion chips annually. This landmark project, set to be operational by next year, aligns with the Indian government’s semiconductor mission and is poised to transform Assam into a key player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
4. Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, here has received a funding of Rs 228 crore from US-based industrialist and entrepreneur Dr Krishna Chivukula, It is considered to be one of the single largest donations received by IIT Madras, which would utilise the funds for taking up various initiatives, the institute's Director V Kamakoti said.

Movies premiering on top OTT platforms:
(a) INDIAN 2 : Kamal Haasan and Shankar collaborative project had a failed theatrical run and it is now headed for its OTT debut on Netflix. The social drama will stream on Netflix from the 9th of this month.
(b) Malayalam actor Mammootty starrer TURBO movie had a middling run at the box office and it is now heading for its OTT debut on Sony Liv on the 9th of this month.
DEFENCE NEWS
1. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has given clearance to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to produce 200 Astra air-to-air missiles for its Su-3O and LCA Tejas fighter aircraft.
The Astra Mark 1 missiles are advanced air-to-air missiles developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
2. ITBP to get Russian KAMAZ Typhoon Vehicle for LAC : The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has successfully conducted a demonstration and trial of the formidable Typhoon vehicle at its Transport Battalion in Chandigarh. The event, attended by officials from Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, marks an important step in upgrading the force’s vehicles.
Kamaz-53949 Typhoon-K is a Russian-made 4×4 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. The vehicle accommodates two crew members and eight fully equipped troops. It can withstand the impact of 8 kg TNT explosion under the floor and 10kg TNT explosion under the wheels.
3. BSF tightens security along Indo-Bangladesh border in Northeast : As the situation turned volatile in Bangladesh, the Border Security Force said “it has received strict instruction from the government to not allow anyone into the country without valid documents”.
Assam shares a 265.5-kilometre border with Bangladesh, while Tripura and Bangladesh share a 856-km-long border.

1. President Droupadi Murmu has departed for Nadi in Fiji after completing official engagements in the capital, Suva. After holding bilateral meetings during the day, President Murmu attended a reception hosted by the Fijian President. Eralier, the President held bilateral talks with her counterpart President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere in capital Suva.
2. The Indian High Commission in London has issued an advisory urging citizens to stay vigilant and exercise caution while traveling to the UK in view of recent disturbances in the country.

1. The first edition of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation - BIMSTEC Business Summit was held yesterday in New Delhi.
2. India is in close and constant touch with its nationals in Bangladesh through its diplomatic missions amid unrest in the neighbouring country.
3. Dr. Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha that presently, around 19 thousand Indian nationals are in Bangladesh, including 9000 students. He said the bulk of the students have already returned to India last month on the advice of the High Commission in Dhaka.

1. In Bangladesh, in a major reshuffle in the top level of Army, Major General Ziaul Ahsan has been relieved from his post while Lt General M Saiful Islam was transferred to the Foreign Ministry. Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has been released from house arrest.
2. The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Bangladesh have outlined plans for the formation of an interim government. Coordinators of the movement has proposed Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus as the Chief adviser of the country's interim government.
Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh's interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
3. Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled Dhaka and arrived in Delhi, seeking asylum. It was reported that she may head to London or any other European Country. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is unlikely to grant her request. She is exploring options with other nations such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well as countries where her immediate family resides: the U.S., U.K., and Finland.
4. The United States Vice-President Kamala Harris has formally secured the Democratic presidential nomination. Harris who became the first Indian-American to win the nomination from a major political party, elected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential candidate.
