TODAY'S NEWS

1.  The Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by PM Modi met in New Delhi and took stock of the situation in Bangladesh. The meeting was attended by External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and others.

2.  BJP President JP Nadda  said that Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh has witnessed transformational growth and progress since the abrogation of article 370 and 35 (A).

3.  “VIRAASAT”, a fortnight long exhibition dedicated to celebrating 10th National Handloom Day began at Handloom Haat in Janpath on  3rd August, 2024. National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd (NHDC) is organising the handloom expo under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India which will conclude on 16th August, 2024.

4.  The BRS announced on Monday that Telangana could face byelections for MLA seats if its defected legislators are declared ineligible. BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao revealed plans to approach the Supreme Court over the issue

5.  Ajit Pawar-led NCP has decided to reach out to voters by launching a statewide yatra ahead of the Vidhan Sabha polls in Maharashtra. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar will kickstart the yatra from Dindori in Nashik district in August 8, the anniversary of Quit India Movement.

6.  Kerala government announced on Monday that it will implement a comprehensive rehabilitation package for the landslide-affected people of Wayanad, where rescue operations and relief missions are still ongoing.

7.   BJP declared Rohini MLA Vijender Gupta as the new leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly on Monday. Gupta, a former Delhi BJP president, will succeed Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, who resigned from the post after being elected to Lok Sabha.

8.  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over West Rajasthan and very heavy rainfall over Gujarat and Maharashtra.  very heavy rainfall is also likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next two days. The weather office has also forecast heavy rainfall over Jammu, Kashmir, East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

LEGAL REPORT 

1.  The Supreme Court on Monday extended its July 22 interim order staying the directives issued by the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh, asking eateries along the Kanwar Yatra routes to display the names of their owners, staff and other details.

2.  The Delhi High Court on Monday allowed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to petition a trial court for bail in the CBI corruption case involving the purported excise policy fraud, noting the change in the case’s circumstances.

3.  Former trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar has moved Delhi High Court with a petition challenging the UPSC’s press release announcing the cancellation of her candidature on July 31 with the petition due to come up for hearing on August 7.

1.  The search for missing individuals from recent cloudburst incidents in Shimla, Mandi, and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh continued for the fifth day yesterday. Around 40 people are still missing, while 15 bodies have been recovered so far.

2.  In Uttarakhand, Relief and rescue operations continued for the fifth day in the disaster-affected areas of Kedarissue. including Kedarnath Dham located in the Rudraprayag district of the state. So far more than 10 thousand people have been rescued safely.  people were airlifted by the Army's MI-17 and Chinook helicopters.

1.  Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha's "IC814 The Kandahar Hijack", starring Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza and Naseeruddin Shah, is slated to stream from August 29 on Netflix.

2.  Janet Yang Re-Elected Film Academy’s President. She has been re-elected as President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a third term. New board officers have also been appointed to key positions, with CEO Bill Kramer expressing support for Yang's continued leadership and the new team’s goals.

DEFENCE NEWS

1.  India will host its first multinational air exercise 'Tarang Shakti 2024' from today in Sular, Tamil Nadu. In the exercise, nearly 30 countries will participate, and out of 30, ten countries will join the exercise with their fighter aircraft. The exercise is being conducted in two phases, which aims to showcase India's defense prowess and provide a platform for participating militaries to foster interoperability.

Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS), Air Marshal A P Singh informed that the first phase is to be held in Sular, Tamilnadu from today to the 14th of August, and the second phase in Jodhpur, Rajasthan from 29th August to 14th September. 

2.  Lieutenant Colonel Kabilan Sai Ashok, a serving Indian Army Officer, has become the youngest Olympic referee in boxing from India at the Paris Olympics 2024. This milestone reflects his exceptional dedication, professionalism, and embodying the high standards of the Indian Army.

3.  Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan chaired an apex level Tri-Service Financial Conference in New Delhi. The conference is aimed at enhancing cohesion and synergy in financial issues of the Armed Forces and will see the participation of senior officials from Ministry of Defence, Controller General Defence Accounts among others. The conference is being coordinated by Headquarters of the Integrated Defence Staff.

✈ INTERNATIONAL NEWS 

1.  President Smt Droupadi Murmu will arrive in Suva, the capital city of Fiji today and take part in official engagements. She will hold bilateral meetings with President of Fiji and address the Fijian Parliament.

2.  Air India has cancelled the scheduled operation of its flights to and from Dhaka with immediate effect.   In view of the emerging situation in Bangladesh, Border Security Force (BSF),  said situation on Indo-Bangladesh border is normal as of now.

3.  Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli calls for expansion of waterways and railways to enhance connectivity with India.

4.  An Indian cultural centre in Dhaka was vandalised, and four Hindu temples across Bangladesh suffered minor damage amid soaring tensions following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ouster.

5.  The Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina landed at the Hindon airbase near Ghaziabad and is on her way to London, diplomatic sources have said. She was received by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at the Hindon airbase. 

🌎 WORLD NEWS 🌍 

1.  Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaves Dhaka after resigning amid unrest in country; Interim government will be formed, announces Army Chief.

2.  As violence gripped Bangladesh amid ongoing student protests, several reports indicated that Sheikh Hasina has resigned as the country's Prime Minister and left the country in a military helicopter. Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that an interim government will be formed to run the country.

3.  Over a month after astronaut Sunita Williams and Butch Willmore docked with the Space Station aboard the Starliner spacecraft, their return still remains unconfirmed. Nasa and Boeing are working as tests continue to return them safely.

Since the launch of Starliner’s Crew Flight Test (CFT) on June 5, Boeing and Nasa have undertaken extensive testing to ensure a safe return for Williams and her crew.

4.  Pakistan has paid over USD 3.6 billion in interest on IMF loans over the past 40 years. The country borrowed approximately USD 29 billion from the IMF in the last 30 years, repaying over USD 21 billion. Revealed by the finance ministry.

1.  OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024 (26 JULY 2024 – 11 AUGUST 2024)

(a) At Paris olympics, in table tennis team event, Indian women including Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, and Archana Kamath beat the Romanian team by 3-2 in the pre-quarterfinal match. With this win, they have qualified for the quarterfinal.

(b) In Badminton, Indian shutler Lakshya Sen missed out a historic Olympic medal as he lost to Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia by 21-13,16-21,10-21 in the bronze medal match.

(c) In wrestling, Nisha Dahiya lost to PAK Sol Gum of North Korea in 68 kg freestyle -quarter final.

(d) Indian shooters Anant Jeet Singh Naruka and Maheshwari Chauhan lost to China in the bronze medal play-off in skeet mixed team event.

2.  Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia  jointly released commemorative postage stamps celebrating the 33rd Olympics Paris 2024 in New Delhi.

3. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has declared the gender tests conducted by the International Boxing Association (IBA) on two female boxers at last year’s World Championships as illegitimate and lacking credibility. 

4.  Manu Bhaker, India's two-time Olympic bronze medallist, has been chosen to be India's flagbearer for the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics. India’s men’s flagbearer for the ceremony is yet to be confirmed. The closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics will take place on August 11. 

5.  Avinash Sable created history by becoming the first Indian man to qualify for the men's 3000m steeplechase final at the Paris Olympics on Monday.
