TODAY'S NEWS

1.  The India Meteorological Departent (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall to continue along the West Coast of the country during the next five days. 

2.  The Central government has reiterated unwavering support to Kerala to deal with the devastating landslide in Wayanad district. Death toll rises to 240. 

3.  The Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that 5G Spectrum Auction 2023-24 has brought in a revenue of over 11 thousand 340 crore rupees to the government exchequer. 

4.  The Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak 2024 was introduced in the Lok Sabha by the Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu. While introducing the Bill, the Minister said, Aircraft Act was established in 1934 and a lot of amendments have been made over the years. 

The Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak empowers the Central Government to make rules regulating the design, manufacture, maintenance, possession, use, operation, sale, export or import of any aircraft or class of aircraft and for securing the safety of aircraft operations.

6.  Appointment of New Governors :

(a) Lakshman Prasad Acharya took oath as the Governor of Manipur. 

(b) Om Prakash Mathur  took oath as 16th Governor of Sikkim.

(c) Gulab Chand Kataria  took oath as new Governor of Punjab and Chandigarh Administrator at Punjab Raj Bhavan.

(d)  Former Union Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar  took oath as new governor of Jharkhand.

7.  The Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has lauded the government’s efforts towards the conservation of the country's culture and heritage through capacity building and international cooperation.

8.  Over Five crore candidates appeared in different exams conducted by the National testing agency NTA since its formation. It conducted 250 exams so far. the government increased the Medical seats to one lakh 10 thousand in the last 10 year, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed.

9.  In Jharkhand, restoration work is underway on a war footing on Tatanagar- Chakradharpur rail section of South Central Railway. 16 out of 18 coaches of Howrah-Mumbai mail have been removed from the railway track. Repair of rail track and electrification work will only be started after the removal of all the coaches of the ill fated train from track. 

10.  In Jammu, another batch of 1654 pilgrims left Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas base camp  for the Kashmir valley to perform pilgrimage to Amarnath Cave Shrine. 

11.  Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Mamata Mohanta has resigned from the Rajya Sabha. The Chairman of Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar has accepted her resignation. Smt Mohanta, a prominent tribal leader from the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, was elected to the Upper House of the state in April 2020, and her tenure was till April 2026. 

12.  In Telangana,  Gadwal MLA Bandla Krishnamohan Reddy, who joined the Congress four weeks ago, is set to return to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). 

13.  1983-batch IAS officer Preeti Sudan appointed as Chairperson of Union Public Service Commission.

14.  The first ceremony for the ‘One DAE One Subscription’ (ODOS) program took place at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. This initiative aims to improve access to scientific research for the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). 

15.  Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the NATS 2.0 portal and disbursed Rs. 100 crore in stipends via DBT to enhance apprenticeship training for young graduates and diploma holders. 

16.  The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal launched the book titled ‘India@100: Envisioning Tomorrow’s Economic Powerhouse’ authored by Prof. K V Subramanian in New Delhi. 

17.  Secretary of the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Chandra Lal Das has been given additional charge of the Secretary of the Steel Ministry. 

18.  Former Indian Information Service, IIS officer Suresh Chandra Sharma passed away today in New Delhi. He was 83 years. 

19.  The national capital was deluged following a heavy spell of rain on Wednesday evening with a red alert issued and more than 10 flights to Delhi diverted. 

20.  Several opposition leaders on Wednesday supported Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari's demand for withdrawing GST on insurance premiums, stating that it adds to the burden of the middle class.

LEGAL REPORT

1.  The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has cancelled the provisional candidature of IAS trainee Puja Khedkar and permanently debarred her from all its future Exams. The UPSC announced in a release that after examining available records, it has found Ms Khedkar guilty of violating Civil Services Examination - CSE 2022 Rules. 

The Commission had earlier issued a show cause notice to her for fraudulently availing attempts beyond the permissible limit by faking her identity. It added that despite giving her an extension till yesterday for a response, she failed to submit her explanation within the prescribed time.

2.  India has been elected as Vice Chair of the Supply Chain Council. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry termed it a significant milestone for the country. The Ministry said that India and 13 other Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) partners have established three supply chain bodies under the landmark Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity Agreement relating to supply chain resilience. 

3.  Three Communist Party of India (Marxist) MPs from Kerala have approached Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar requesting him to direct Union Home Minister Amit Shah to clarify his statement on Wednesday during a calling attention motion on Wayanad tragedy. The MPs criticised Mr. Shah for saying the State ignored weather alerts from the Centre.

FINANCE

1.  The government has allocated a total amount of 7212 crore and 85 lakh rupees in the financial year 2023-24 under the Nirbhaya Fund. The Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi said. 

2.  One 97 Communications Ltd, the parent company of Paytm, a payments and financial services distribution company in India, has launched the country’s first ‘Paytm NFC Card Soundbox’. This payment device is designed to integrate ‘near field communication’ (NFC) technology with mobile QR payments. This means, the soundbox will also serve as a card payment machine as well as a receipt announcer, which could provide an efficient solution for card payments to millions of offline merchants. 

3.  Eleven public sector banks, excluding State Bank of India (SBI), have charged Rs 2,331 crore from account holders for their failure to maintain minimum balance in savings banks in FY2024. A  rise of 25.63 per cent from Rs 1,855.43 crore in FY2023. These banks collected Rs 5,614 crore from account holders for not maintaining the minimum balance in the last three years. 

4.  India aims to become a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047, the 100th anniversary of its independence. According to a plan by NITI Aayog, called ‘Vision for Viksit Bharat @ 2047’, the goal is to raise the average income per person to USD 18,000 per year. This plan is designed to help India avoid getting stuck at a middle-income level. 

To reach this goal, India needs to grow its economy from the current USD 3.36 trillion to USD 30 trillion.

5.  Shriram Capital has received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to establish an Asset Reconstruction Company (ARC).

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

1.  Superstar Rajinikanth Is Ready to take over Tamil Box Office with JAILER  movie in 2025.  Jailer 2 is aiming to release in 2025, the same year Thalaiva is arriving with a pan-India film Coolie. 

2.  Pixar’s summer season blockbuster sequel Inside Out 2 — from director Kelsey Mann and screenwriters Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein — has crossed a major box office milestone, topping $1.505 billion to become the biggest animated movie of all time.

DEFENCE

1.  India will host its first multinational air exercise 'Tarang Shakti 2024' in two phases from the 6th. In this exercise, nearly 30 countries will participate, and out of 30, ten countries will join the exercise with their fighter aircraft. The exercise will showcase India's defense prowess and provide a platform for participating militaries to foster interoperability.

Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal A P Singh informed that the first phase is to be held at Sular in Tamilnadu from the 6th to the 14th August, and the second phase at Jodhpur in Rajasthan from the 29th August to the 14th September. He added that 10 countries including Australia, Bangladesh, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, United Kindom, USA, and Singapore will join the exercise with their aircraft and 18 countries will attend as observers.

2.   Lt Gen Sadhna Saxena Nair, VSM, is set to make history as the first woman to assume the role of Director General of Medical Services (Army) on 01 August 2024. This appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of the Indian Army, showcasing the increasing role of women in high-ranking positions within the armed forces. 

(a) Lt Gen Nair is a distinguished graduate of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune and was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in December 1985. 

(b)  Earlier, Air Marshal Sadhna Saxena Nair took charge as the Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces), becoming the first women officer to hold the prestigious post. 

(c)  She is effectively only the second woman officer who has served throughout in the Indian Air Force to be promoted to the rank of Air Marshal. The first woman officer to achieve this was Air Marshal Padma Bandopadhyay (Retd). 

4.  Lt Gen Devendra Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), recently visited the Institute of Military Law (IML), where he was briefed on the latest training activities and the adaptations in the curriculum to meet future requirements. 

5.  BSF recruits 54,760 personnel in five years; Special provisions announced for Ex-Agniveers . The Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said seven thousand 372 new posts have been created in BSF in the last five years. He said there are over 10,000 vacancies in BSF. 

6.  The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) unveiled its new ‘Suvidha Software Version 1.0’ during the inaugural ‘Annual Operational Sea Training Conference’ held in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on July 30, 2024. This advanced software aims to improve training protocols and maintain consistency across all ICG platforms. 

7.  The Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) has introduced the Electronic Services e-Health Assistance and Tele-consultation (E-SeHAT) module as of July 30, 2024. This initiative allows ECHS beneficiaries to receive online medical consultations from their homes, eliminating the need to visit ECHS Polyclinics. 

The E-SeHAT module offers structured, video-based consultations, aiming to enhance healthcare delivery for veterans by providing timely and quality medical care remotely.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1.  Prime Minister of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh has arrived in New Delhi for a three-day state visit to India. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation. 

2.  The Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma called on Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka. The High Commissioner said, that based on the two countries’ national development visions, Vision 2047 for India and Vision 2041 for Bangladesh, both countries entered into a new era of cooperation. 

3.  UNESCO’s 46th World Heritage Committee Session to inscribe global landmarks on the World Heritage List concluded in New Delhi. This year, India not only hosted the annual committee but also chaired it. UNESCO inscribed 24 new landmark sites and two major boundary modifications into its World Heritage List. 

4.  The Russian ambassador to India Denis Alipov on Wednesday offered condolences to the people of India in the wake of landslides in Kerala.

1.  Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh killed in Tehran; Iran vows to retaliate. Ismail Haniyeh,  died in an overnight air strike in Tehran. 

2.  The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the killing of Hamas Political Bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in an attack in Tehran and offered condolences to the Palestinian people. 

3.  Two police personnel and a civilian were killed after terrorists launched a gun attack on a police checkpoint in the Charwazagai area of Pakistan's Khyber district. 

4.  Tensions in the Port City of Gwadar persist as the Pakistani defence forces have not released the previously arrested senior leaders of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) amid the Baloch Raaji Muchi protests. 

Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has expressed support for Baloch people protesting against enforced disappearances and "strongly condemned" violent responses against peaceful protesters.
