TODAY'S  NEWS 

1.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducts aerial survey of landslide hit regions of Wayanad in Kerala. 

2.  PM Modi reviews relief and rehabilitation efforts in landslide hit regions of Wayanad in Kerala; Assures state government of all possible support.

3.  Haryana's Minister of State for Sainik and Ardhsainik Welfare, Dr. Abhay Singh Yadav has said that under the Har ghar Tiranga Abhiyan, a Tiranga Yatra will be taken out in every village in Mahendragarh district from 11 Aug to August 14. 

4.  The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet  approved the appointment of T.V. Somanathan as Cabinet Secretary. 

Mr. Somanathan has been appointed for a tenure of two years, starting from the 30th of this month. He is an officer from the 1987 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) of Tamil Nadu cadre. 

5.  The Union Cabinet on Friday (August 9, 2024) approved eight new railway projects at an estimated cost of ₹24,657 crore to provide connectivity, facilitate ease of travelling, minimise logistics cost, reduce oil imports and lower carbon dioxide emissions. 

6.   Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on Saturday alleged Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray were trying to use the Maratha quota stir to trigger riots ahead of the state assembly elections, especially in Marathwada region.

7.  In Karnataka, the chain on the 19th gate of Tungabhadra dam cut and snapped on Saturday midnight, causing sudden outflow of 35,000 cusec water into the river. This is the first major incident after 70 years. Officials at the site said that the restoration work can be taken up only after releasing around 60 tmc feet water from the dam.

8.  Heavy rains lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh as 128 roads remained closed in the state due to landslides and flash floods. 

LEGAL REPORT 

1.  Jammu and Kashmir, two civilians have been reportedly injured due to indiscriminate firing by terrorists in Gagarmandu area of Anantnag district yesterday afternoon. 

2.  Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia on Saturday called upon party workers and people to fight against the "dictatorship" in the country, a day after he was released from jail in the Delhi excise policy case.

3.  The Centre has threatened to cancel more national highway projects in Punjab in case the situation, which it termed as “worsening”, does not improve.

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has written a demi-official letter to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, raising serious safety concerns for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officers, contractors and their staff besides pending land acquisition matters.

Four persons were trampled to death by an elephant in Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh,   Jashpur divisional forest officer Jitendra Upadhyay informed that the tragic incident took place at Gamhriya ward-9 under Bagicha Nagar panchayat on Friday.

FINANCE 

1.  The Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 scheme. The Cabinet also gave its nod to the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin during Financial Year 2024-25 to 2028-29. 

2.  Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman asks Banks to focus on Core Banking, mobilise deposits and lending funds. 

3.  Hindenburg Research has once again stirred controversy by making fresh against the Adani Group. This time, the focus is on SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband, Dhaval Buch. According to Hindenburg, the couple had hidden stakes in offshore funds linked to the Adani conglomerate.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS 

1.  Actor Arjun Rampal on Saturday requested his followers not to respond to any messages from his X account as it has been hacked. 

2.  Shaktiman and Mahabharat actor Mukesh Khanna has sternly reacted to Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn doing pan-masala ads. Khanna, in a recent interview, urged the stars to not promote pan masala and gambling and betting apps under the disguise of surrogate advertisements. 

3.  Veteran Hollywood actress Mitzi McCall passes away on Thursday in Burbank.  She was 93.

DEFENCE NEWS  

1.  India's defence export soared by 78% in the first quarter of 2024-25 as compared to the same period of the last fiscal year. According to the Defence Ministry, defence export increased to 6,915 crore rupees  in the first quarter of 2024-25, compared to 3,865 crore rupees in the same quarter of the previous year.

2.  The Agniveer scheme is a golden opportunity for the youths to serve the nation, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi has said. He was  was present at INS Chilika in Odisha's Khurda district for the night passing out parade of Agniveers.   A total of 1,389 Agniveers, including 214 women, joined the service on Friday following 16 weeks of training. 

3.  Two soldiers were killed while six others, including two civilians, were injured in a fierce gunfight between terrorists and security forces in the higher reaches of Anantnag district in south Kashmir.

The encounter took place during a cordon and search operation initiated by the security forces based on intelligence reports indicating the presence of terrorists in the remote Ahlan Gagarmandu forest of Kokernag. 

✈ INTERNATIONAL NEWS 

1.  President Smt Droupadi Murmu the Grand Collar of Order of Timor Leste, the highest civilian award by President José Ramos Horta at the Presidential Palace in Dili.  Dili is the capital and largest city of East Timor.

2.  External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has said India is committed to deepen ties with the Maldives for the benefit of people of both countries and the region. Dr Jaishankar, who is on a three-day official visit to the Maldives, said this on X after meeting the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. 

3.  India and Maldives have signed an agreement to introduce the Unified (UPI) Payments Interface in the archipelago nation, which will have a "very positive" impact on its tourism sector, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said. 

4.  The Border Security Force is on high alert along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam in response to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.  District commissioner Mridul Yadav said that the Integrated Check Post has been closed since Monday and not just import-export, even the movement of people is closed. 

🌎 WORLD NEWS 🌍 

1.  At least 93 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli strike on a school and mosque in Gaza that was sheltering displaced people. 

2.  In Brazil, 61 people have been killed in a plane crash in Sao Paulo. The ill fated plane was flying from Cascavel in Paraná to Sao Paulo city when it came down in the town of Vinhedo.

3.  Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus on Saturday condemned attacks on the minority communities in the violence-hit nation, terming them as "heinous", and urged the youth to protect all Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist families from harm.

4.  Members of minority communities in Bangladesh faced at least 205 incidents of attacks in 52 districts since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5, according to two Hindu organisations in the violence-hit nation.

5.  Bangladesh's Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has resigned following intense protests at the Supreme Court in Dhaka.

 OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024 (26 JULY 2024 – 11 AUGUST 2024)

(a)  India's Day 15 campaign has begun, with the spotlight mainly on golf and wrestling. Golfers Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar ended their campaigns in women's golf, with Aditi, who stood at a formidable 4th spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, failing to produce her best. The golfer finished with the final score of +2, while Diksha Dagar ended at +13 to finish significantly below the top-10. 

(b)  The Paris Olympics will close today.

2.  India Sardjoe made history by winning the first-ever breakdancing match at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Friday. Despite her impressive performance, she faced a tough loss in the semi-final of this debut sport on Saturday.

 Her unique name 'India' caused some confusion, with many thinking that India, the country, was making strides in Olympic breakdancing. However, she is an 18-year-old breakdancer from the Netherlands who represented her nation in 'breaking' at the 33rd Summer Games.
