TODAY’S NEWS

1.  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and South Karnataka for today. 

The weather agency has made similar  for Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh,West Uttar Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh till Thursday. 

2.  President Smt. Droupadi Murmu to host first two-day conference of governors at Rashtrapati Bhavan Starting Friday. 

3.  PM Modi reiterated that Government has given special focus on ease of living, skill development and employment. He was addressing the inaugural session of ‘Journey Towards Viksit Bharat: A Post Union Budget 2024-25 Conference’ in New Delhi.

4.  The government has approved seven hundred 55 applications across 14 sectors and realized one crore 23 lakh rupees till March 2024 under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, and around 8 lakh employment has been generated. 

5.  Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan  launched the National Apprenticeship and Training Scheme 2.0 Portal and disbursed 100 crore rupees stipends to apprentices through the DBT mode in New Delhi. 

6.  The Government is promoting organic farming using organic manure through the schemes of Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) in all the states other than the North Eastern States and Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) exclusively in the northeast states. 

7.  India’s first sunken museum, located at the Humayun Tomb complex had it's grand opening in Delhi on 29 July  2024. It will be open to visitors starting July 30.  Humayun’s Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its architectural and historical significance. Constructed in the 16th century.  

8.  Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has approved the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority’s (JNPA) project for a Rs. 284.19 crore agricultural processing and storage facility. 

9. The Telangana Government has appointed Madan B Lokur, former Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, as the chairman of the Judicial Commission examining alleged irregularities in the power purchase during the tenure of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government.

10.  Udhampur- Srinagar- Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project which cost's Rs 41,000 crore:  Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Rajya Sabha that the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is expected to be completed in this financial year.  He added that out of the 272-kilometre-lon rail link, 255 kilometres have been completed. 

11.  The Ministry of Education celebrated the 4th anniversary of NEP 2020 at Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam 2024 in New Delhi, releasing IKS books and launching key initiatives. 

12.  The inaugural ceremony of ‘One DAE One Subscription’ (ODOS) took place on July 29, at Tata Memorial Hospital, in Mumbai. ODOS is a unique idea enabling Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) & all its units/subunits (about 60) together under one umbrella for read and publish access to national and international research papers as well as scientific journals.

LEGAL REPORT

1.  The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Delhi Chief Secretary, Delhi Police Commissioner and Commissioner of Delhi Municipal Corporation over the deaths of three students due to drowning in the city. The Commission asked them to submit a detailed report in the matter within two weeks. 

2.  The Supreme Court rejected  Bihar government's plea for revival of laws increasing quotas for SCs, STs and OBCs to 65% from 50% in state govt jobs and admissions to state-run educational institutions by declining to stay Patna high court's June 20 judgment quashing the law as unconstitutional. 

****** MISHAPS ***** 

1.  In Kerala, the death toll has reached 110 in the landslide that ravaged Wayanad earlier yesterday morning. Relief and rescue operations by Army and Navy personnel are underway in the region.

(b)  Prime Minister Modi has announced an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased.

(c)  NDRF Deputy Commandant, S Shankar Pandian said, NDRF teams are conducting search and rescue operation at various locations in Wayanad. 

2.  In Jharkhand, relief and rescue operation after Howrah- Mumbai train accident has been completed. Two passengers were killed and 24 others injured following the derailment of 18 bogies of Howrah-Mumbai mail yesterday morning between Barabambo and Kharsawa railway station under Chakradharpur railway division. 

FINANCE

1.Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasised that Government is complying with fiscal deficit trajectory and will bring it down to below 4.5 per cent by 2025-26. Ms Sitharaman was replying to the discussion on the Union Budget 2024-25 and the Budget for Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir for 2024-25 in the Lok Sabha.

2. Vistara offers voluntary retirement of ground staff before Air India merger :  Vistara on Monday (July 29) announced the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) for permanent ground staff with over five years of continuous service. This scheme, available until 23rd August 2024, excludes pilots, cabin crew, licensed role holders, and employees retiring by 31st March 2025. 

3.  Aditya Birla Group Chairman, Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla on July 30, announced the launch of the Group’s jewellery retail business, marking the Group’s foray into the rapidly expanding Rs.6.7 lakh crore Indian jewellery market. 

4.  Parle, the biscuit brand owned by Parle Products, continues to be India’s top FMCG brand. According to the latest edition of Brand Footprint, Kantar World panel’s annual ranking of the most chosen consumer brands in India. 

5.  Aerospace industry leaders Thales and Garuda Aerospace on Tuesday announced a collaboration to promote the development of the drone ecosystem in India. As part of the agreement, Thales will provide expertise in the field of unmanned traffic management (UTM) solutions, UAV detection and system integration, while Garuda will bring its skills in the manufacture and use of UAVs. 

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS 

1.  Sonu Sood and Jacqueline Fernandez’s action-packed film Fateh is set to hit theaters on 10 January, 2025. 

2.  DEVARA: Part 1' has been in production for two years and will debut on September 27. Jr NTR fans are eagerly awaiting his comeback to the silver screen following the massive success of SS Rajamouli's 'RRR'. The actor is set to thrill fans with his upcoming big-scale movie 'Devara: Part 1', alongside Janhvi Kapoor.

DEFENCE

1.  Indian Coast Guard (ICG) launched ‘Suvidha Software Version 1.0’ during its maiden ‘Annual Operational Sea Training Conference’ at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh on 30 July 2024. This software is a cutting-edge tool designed to enhance training protocols and ensure consistency across all ICG platforms.

2.  Lt Gen PC Nair, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, PhD, Director General of Assam Rifles, was honored with a Guard of Honour at the Headquarters Directorate General Assam Rifiles in Laitkor, Shillong, as he approaches his retirement on 31 July, 2024. 

3.  The Phase-2 Ballistic Missile Defence System (BMD) flight test was successfully completed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on July 24, 2024. This is a critical step in showcasing India’s capacity in BMD.The target missile for this test was launched by DRDO initially. 

4.  The Defence Ministry and the National Stock Exchange on Monday signed an agreement that seeks to help Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and emerging companies in the defence sector to scale up their business operations, explore new markets and fund their research and development activities. 

5.  The four-nation grouping Quad on Monday announced a plan to expand its ambitious Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) program to the Indian Ocean region that would facilitate monitoring of the strategic waters.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1.  Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh is on a three day State Visit to India. 

2.  In the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad, the Indian team won one Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medal. 

The Competition was held in Riyadh city of Saudi Arabia from the 21st to the 30th of this month. Devesh Bhaiyya from the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra won gold while Mumbai’s Avanish Bansal and Hyderabad’s Harshin Posina grabbed silver medals. Kashyap Khandelwal from Mumbai brought a bronze medal.  327 students from 94 countries participated in the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad.

3.  Foreign ministers of Quad - Australia, India, Japan and the United States - on Monday said they were seriously concerned about intimidating and coercive manoeuvres in the South China Sea and affirmed to bolster maritime security in the region. 

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the strained ties between India and China on Monday during a Quad meeting in Japan. The senior lawmaker however insisted that New Delhi was “not looking to other countries to sort out" the situation.

4.  The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) will impart training to individuals or experts working in the field of archeology from abroad so that they can understand nuances of preparing a detailed dossier, protection plan and other reports to seek coveted UNESCO World Heritage tag. 

5. NASA and ISRO Delay The Launch of The NISAR Satellite Due To changes in the position of the Sun:  NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite is nearing completion. NASA is finalizing the fabrication of radar antenna reflectors on NISAR while testing on satellite components. A radar antenna reflector was created to transmit and receive microwave signals, either from or to the Earth's surface.

🌎 WORLD NEWS 🌍

1.  The World Health Organization (WHO) announced a new project to speed up the development of vaccines for bird flu in poorer countries. This project will use messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. 

2.  Bangladesh observed a day of mourning Tuesday in memory of more than 200 people killed in recent weeks during violence that evolved from student protests over the South Asian country's quota system for government jobs. 

3.  Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) announced on July 29, that Nicolas Maduro has won the presidential election once again and will govern the country from 2025 to 2031. 

4.  The United States will provide $500 million in military funding to the Philippines, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. 

5.  Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir has said that Baloch activist Sammi Deen Baloch, along with several other Baloch activists, was allegedly arrested by the Gwadar police.

2.  OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024 (26 JULY 2024 – 11 AUGUST 2024)

(a)  Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh bagged second medal for India with Bronze in 10 meter Air Pistol Mixed team event while Indian Hockey Men's team defeated Ireland 2-0 to lead Pool B. More Details from our correspondent who is covering the games in Paris.

(b)  President Smt. Droupadi Murmu has congratulated Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh for winning bronze medal for India in the mixed team 10 metre air pistol event for shooting.

(c) Shuttler P V Sindhu and wrestler Sushil Kumar are the only two other Indians to have won multiple Olympic medals but in separate Olympic games.    

3.  Rohan Bopanna, one of India's most accomplished tennis players, has announced his retirement from representing India in international competitions following his exit from the Paris 2024 Olympics.

4.  The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and officially branded as Paris 2024, is an ongoing international multi-sport event taking place from 24 July to 11 August 2024 in France, with the Opening Ceremony taking place on 26 July. 

Paris is the main host city, with events held at 16 other cities spread across Metropolitan France, plus one subsite in Tahiti, French Polynesia
